Food from the Bar Begins, Supporting Houston Food Bank

The Cromeens Law Firm is proud to be a sponsor-and drop-off location-for the annual Houston Food Bank, Food from the Bar drive.

Every year, about 800,000 hungry Houstonians and folks from across the 18 counties served-our neighbors-rely on the Houston Food Bank to open its doors and empty its shelves so a hot meal can be served at homes of all shapes and sizes…even schools.

What is Food from the Bar?

Food from the Bar is a one-month event that taps Houston’s legal community to spearhead efforts to help fill the pantries at the Houston Food Bank. Beginning April 1 and ending May 1, Food from the Bar encourages donations in the form of food, funds, and volunteer time from members of our community.

Last year, Food from the Bar had 38 participating legal organizations that raised more than $200,000 and collected 16,196 pounds of food. That’s the equivalent of 766,254 meals for our extended Houston family!

Help us to make 2019 bigger and better by dropping off food and money donations at The Cromeens Law Firm office, located at 8431 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77024. If you can’t make it to the office to drop off your donation, we also have a convenient online donations page to make it easier for Houston Food Bank supporters to participate.

Want to make this a mobile effort? Text FFTB1937 to 71777 and we’ll send you a link that will take you straight to the donations page.

What’s Needed?

Beyond a basic money donation that will help Houston Food Bank cover expenses for the services it provides, there are specific items that allow them to better serve the people that depend on their generosity.

Items include:

  • Canned ready-to-eat items with pull tops: vegetables and fruit
  • Protein in pouches or pull-top cans: tuna, beef stew, chili, and canned chicken
  • Peanut butter (all kinds)
  • Snacks: granola bars, breakfast bars, etc.

You can even donate non-food items, such as:

  • Toiletries
  • Paper goods
  • Diapers
  • Cleaning supplies: mops, mop buckets, brooms, bleach wipes, bleach, garbage bags, and bug spray

Why Houston Food Bank?

Houston Food Bank began Food from the Bar to further encourage community participation so that they can be sure to meet the needs of the people they serve. Houston Food Bank provides assistance to many venues, including food pantries, meal sites, soup kitchens, shelters, and schools.

With more than 122 million nutritious meals served last year alone, Houston Food Bank is now the largest food bank in the nation. Take that New York!

On any given day, there are some 66,000 people who go hungry in Houston and its surrounding counties. Sadly, that includes more than 5,000 children.

Too many people out there have to make tough choices every day:

  • 72% struggle with whether to buy food or pay their utilities
  • 60% have to decide whether to buy food or pay the rent
  • 74% are forced to juggle food and medicine expenses
