Episode 37: Learn Your Liens, Wyoming!

with Jason Robinson

The Quit Getting Screwed Podcast is back with another lien laws episode, this time pulling apart the laws required for Wyoming contractors to file a valid lien. Karalynn Cromeens is joined once again by a familiar face, construction attorney Jason Robinson. He last joined her for the coverage of Utah’s lien laws, and is back with more to share! In his time in the industry, Jason has become an aficionado in Utah and Wyoming construction law, especially, and his lien law mastery is paying off two-fold for our audience. If you’re a Wyoming contractor who likes getting paid what you are owed, Jason has some insight for you!

For those new to his story, Jason refreshed his background in the construction industry. As a young boy, Jason’s father was deeply involved in multiple construction companies, growing in his position and developing a passion for the trades. His dad asked that they learn a trade before continuing their education when they were young, and as a result, many of his siblings now own construction companies. Though not truly in construction, Jason didn’t stray far from the family industry. He got a degree in law, and upon beginning his practice, his work would lead him right back to the trades. Jason’s love of the industry is prominent, to be sure.

Wyoming, similarly, to the last state Jason covered, is fairly straightforward as far as filing a lien is concerned. Something that makes it unique, however, is that lien timelines do not differ based upon the project type, but rather based on the lien claimant and their place in the “Construction Food Chain.” Additionally, there are statutory forms made available for filing your liens in the state of Wyoming, provided by the state itself, a generous gift from Wyoming legislators that is especially rare when it comes to lien assistance. There are two primary aspects; the preliminary notice and the lien waiver. Wyoming is one of only roughly 12 states that actually mandate these forms, and it is essential that Wyoming contractors know that they are required.

Jason’s experience and expertise are truly impressive, and his concise, well-worded way of explaining even the trickiest of details makes learning and implementing state of Wyoming construction lien law a breeze.
